Kaukauna, Wis. — Midwest Carriers, a Kaukauna-based trucking company, recently was named a SmartWay High Performer by the Environmental Protection Agency. This highly-coveted industry award is given to companies that lead the freight industry in reducing their carbon footprint.
Of the 590 refrigerated carriers in the country who partner with the EPA through SmartWay, Midwest Carriers is in the top six percent, putting the local company a step ahead in its efforts to meet the challenges of sustainable goods transportation.
“Being named a SmartWay High Performer again is a tremendous source of pride for Midwest Carriers,” said Eric Van Handel, company president. “It takes collaboration between drivers, managers, and customer support to make something like this possible. To determine which carriers qualify as High Performers, the EPA collects annual efficiency and air quality performance data like mileage, fuel usage, and average hauling weight from SmartWay partners. It analyzes the data and arranges it into five performance ranges, and High Performers fall into the top performance range category.
Fewer than 10 percent of all SmartWay carriers operate fleets efficient enough to make the SmartWay High Performer list for carbon emissions. Carbon is a leading indicator of fuel use, meaning that SmartWay High Performers for carbon also consume less fuel for every mile they travel and for every ton of freight they move.

Launched in 2004, the SmartWay program was created in response to the negative impact freight transportation has on the environment and public health. The voluntary program provides a system for tracking, documenting and sharing information about fuel use and freight emissions across supply chains. It also helps companies identify and select efficient freight carriers, transport modes, equipment, and operational strategies to improve supply chain sustainability and lower costs.
